An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a smaller, independent home (such as an in-law apartment, backyard cottage, or garage apartment) located on the same lot as a primary home.

Since 2023, Maine law requires municipalities to allow at least one ADU on most lots with a single-family home, subject to local rules and site constraints.

Prior to reading this, which best describes what you knew about this ADU law in Maine?

If you were to consider adding an ADU on your property, what do you think would be the biggest obstacles, if any? (You choose up to THREE, if any)

What, if any, would be the main reasons for you to build an ADU in the future? (You can choose up to THREE, if any)

Which of the following, if any, would be most helpful to make ADUs easier to understand or pursue for you? (You can choose up to FIVE, if any)

Any other comments or suggestions about ADUs in Maine or your community?
