Prefer the county to fix our poor road conditions, homeless population, etc. before using our tax money for the arts.
While I think the arts are an important part of expression and really enjoy donating to and viewing artists and art shows, I don't feel that the county should be funding these endeavors. That is where GoFundMe types of sites and requests for other, non-monetary, donations (venues, printing, personal time, etc) should be leveraged. Use that money to fix our roads and infrastructure instead...
Just making the observation that when it comes to publicly funded services (e.g. safety, education, social services, etc. ) the arts would be way down at the bottom of the list as a "nice to have". When it comes to lower priority publicly funded services (e.g. Library, Parks and Recreation, Events, and Arts) I would again put Arts at the bottom of the list. However, you didn't give us an option to rate Arts to other publicly funded options.
Art is in the eye of the beholder... your never going to make everyone happy... but giving help to our youth to study and have course work in art, might trigger a future artist, architect etc... Art of Music also needs to return to our schools for our youth to know history and appreciation!
I would love to see more art programs offered for children. Plays, art classes, music classes, etc..
Arts’ programs are the first things slashed when govt entities cut back on funds for communities and educational programs. Studies have demonstrated a direct connection between the arts (visual, audio, etc) and creative thinking and information processing so I believe that County support for the arts is not only important but critical in this complex society.
Open the library on Sunday for all activities related to arts/humanities and everything else the community might enjoy on their day off (reference research, art displays and sales within the library, poetry readings, computer use, etc.) Implement a legacy art program where artwork from the deceased can be donated, shown, sold, etc. so that a person's artistic life's work doesn't end up in the trash.
Supporting the ARTS is a personal decision and up to individual tastes. Public funds should not be used for this specialized area of interest. If people are that motivated and supportive of the ARTS, then it should be funded by personal donations and fees collected at the events. If events can not support themselves, perhaps they should not take place. These are Special Interest Groups (performing arts, short films, paintings etc) and if those that love and support them don't fully fund their area of interest, why should the "public" be expected to carry the shortfall?
Marketing the art community often is seen as promoting awareness. That does NOT work!!! People have to know WHY they should care or how it will benefit the community they live in and them as an individual. Do not make the mistake of assuming the community understands the benefits, i.e. creative thinking adds to our level of educated workforce etc. When I teach marketing we say you must start with the premise that NOBODY CARES, now how do we make them care. -Kari Hagensmith 916-792-8897
promote music- of all kinds- concerts etc.
Until we can fully fund County services (Sheriff, Fire, Highway, Homeless issues, etc.) we should not be spending funds on leisure or non-essential activities. Arts are important, but basic needs should absolutely be made the priority.
